Lock replacement

You replace a lock when it is broken or sticking, after moving house, or as an upgrade to a higher security class. The locksmith removes the old lock, adjusts the new one to the door and checks that bolt and strike plate align properly — it is precisely that adjustment work that determines whether a lock keeps turning smoothly for years.

Expect € 95 to € 250 per lock, including fitting; the choice of materials sets the range. A standard mortise lock sits at the bottom, a security lock with SKG stars and anti-snap protection at the top. Ask the locksmith to name the options with prices before anything is fitted.

Good to know: if only the cylinder is worn or insecure, the whole lock usually does not need replacing — that is the cheaper 'cylinder replacement' job. An honest professional says so when that suffices.
